Staffing employment changed little in August, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, continuing a pattern that began in January. Last month's job count in temporary help services increased by about 3,000, seasonally adjusted, which was 0.1% more than July of this year and 2.8% more than August of last year.
Staffing industry employment has moved little since peaking last October–December. Historically, BLS numbers show that industry employment declines modestly early in the calendar year and grows to a high point late in the year. That pattern has been largely absent this year.
BLS figures show that employment in temporary help services has been hovering at around 2.6 million jobs over the past 10 months. In Friday's report, BLS revised its June number down and its July number up, both very slightly. Since December, month-to-month changes–up or down–have been less than 1%. August marked the 38th consecutive month of year-over-year growth, but the growth rate has been easing, particularly in the last several months.
BLS reported modest overall job growth in August—128,000, largely in health care and food service. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.7% from 4.8% in July. Both numbers were in line with those of recent months and, like staffing, show little change in the nation's overall employment situation. BLS noted the lack of change in other labor market indicators: the number of unemployed persons, the labor force participation rate, the employment-to-population ratio, and even hours worked and hourly earnings.

Not sure as to what you'd like to be doing for the rest of your life? Don't want another boring job just to pay the bills? Have you ever thought that you can actually enjoy waking up each morning eager to go to work?
Think it's just another pipe dream? Not at all!
To determine what your dream job would be, first make a list of all the things that you enjoy doing. Yes, list watching movies, playing sports, dancing, listening to music, drawing, playing with children, cooking, etc. Believe it or not, these interests can actually be a large component of your dream job!
After your list is complete, go over it carefully and see if there is a trend. For instance, do most of your interests lean toward sports –playing or watching sports, creative – writing or playing an instrument, spectator – movie watching, music listening, etc.?
These interests actually form the basis for many careers. For instance, if you enjoy writing, reading and movie-going, you can become a movie critic. Enjoy sports? You can become a sports writer. Small newspapers are always looking for freelancers to handle these types of assignments and are a wonderful way to try out the job and gain experience.
Enjoy music? What about becoming a DJ on a local radio station? Enjoy children? There are several day care centers and schools where you can work as an assistant, etc.
Once you've discovered a trend, your next step will be to look through the classifieds sections of newspapers or research on-line job boards. Do any specific jobs sound interesting? Check through the job description. See any similarity to your own interests?
Next, determine whether any specific educational requirements are needed. If yes, would you be willing to devote time to fulfilling these requirements?
